Mission:
The mission of Natya Dance Theatre is to create contemporary works of Bharata Natyam, a classical dance-theater form of India. In its performances and teaching, NDT strives to meet the following goals:
1. Engage in consistent expansion of the Bharata Natyam movement vocabulary
2. Facilitate cross-cultural understanding through dance
3. Offer a contemporary voice for timeless values
History:
Artistic Director Hema Rajagopalan founded Natya Dance Theatre in 1974. NDT performs around the world for nearly 50,000 people annually. The NDT School trains dancers in the art of Bharata Natyam.
Artistic Focus:
NDT develops Bharata Natyam for a contemporary audience. NDT's work appeals to a contemporary audience while remaining rooted in traditional forms. NDT seeks to promote positive values in the community at large by working toward the development of a society that is tolerant, open and understanding of differences.
Artistic Director Bio:
Hema Rajagopalan, Founder and Artistic Director
Hema Rajagopalan, a Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer and educator, began learning from the finest Indian masters at age six, appearing before heads of state at the age of seven. Accolades for her artistic and educational work include seven National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowships, a Chicago Dance Awards Dance Achievement Award for 2003, the Award of Excellence from the City of Chicago, Illinois Arts Council Fellowships and Master/Apprentice Grants and the Vishva Kala Bharati Award from the Bharat Kalachar Music and Dance Festival in India. Ms. Rajagopalan received an Emmy Award for her choreography for the PBS production World Stage Chicago. She has taught nearly a thousand students, presented countless workshops, lecture-demonstrations and residencies and has choreographed over thirty works of Bharatanatyam. Two of her students were Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
